University of the Third Age (U3A) is open to all people of the third age i.e. no longer working full-time or raising a family.  We are a self-help organisation for active retired people who meet regularly to develop new interests, pursue educational, creative and leisure activities and just enjoy ourselves and socialise.  We have found a wonderful home in The VanGuard Centre where we meet every month on the first Friday at 1.30.  At these meetings, we update members on events, provide interesting speakers on a wide range of topics and have social gatherings.  We are continuously welcoming new members and developing interest groups which meet in a variety of venues around Caerphilly and in members’ homes. There is a lunch group that meets monthly at different local pubs and thriving Theatre and Garden visits groups which have developed an exciting programme for the coming year. Currently there are 15 separate interest groups that range from French for Beginners and Bridge to Creative Writing, Photography and Family history. Members can join organised walks and   take part in quiz nights. A full list is available on the website at www.u3asites.org.uk/caerphilly and for further information you can contact the current Chair, Judy, on 01633 441192 or judypageturner@yahoo.co.uk.  U3A is a national organisation and comes under the umbrella of The Third Age Trust which is a registered charity. The emphasis is on learning for pleasure; there are no assessments or qualifications. Members, through sharing their knowledge, skills and experience, learn from each other. Members of the Caerphilly branch pay an annual membership of £20.00. Members receive a bi-monthly magazine called Third Age Matters full of interesting articles which is included in the fee.  We encourage people who are interested to come along to a meeting to see whether it is for them.  So, come along and find out more – it’s not about university it’s about fun, new friends and companionship!
